Coetzer back to boost push for World Cup

SCOTLAND will unleash their county big guns when they face Canada in two crucial World Cricket League fixtures next month. Kyle Coetzer, enjoying a fine first season with Northants, and Derbyshire recruit Ali Evans were both last night named in the 14-man squad.

They are joined by Preston Mommsen and Calum MacLeod who are currently on trial at Leicestershire and Northants.

And, with leading strike bowler Gordon Goudie restored to full fitness, injured Clydesdale paceman Saffy Sharif is the only first-choice player missing. The Scots currently sit third in the eight-team table from which two teams will gain automatic qualification for the 2015 World Cup.

County commitments prevent Coetzer taking part in next week’s I-Cup clash, also against the Canadians. His place goes to all-rounder Moneeb Iqbal.

Iqbal is one of eight of the I-Cup squad who get the chance to play themselves into form today when Scotland Lions begin a three-day encounter with Lancashire at Boughton Hall.

Meanwhile, Cricket Scotland chairman Keith Oliver was yesterday re-elected to the Executive Board of the ICC.

Intercontinental Cup Squad (Scotland v Canada, 4-7 July): G Drummond capt, R Flannigan, M Haq, J Davey, R Berrington, P Mommsen, C MacLeod, M Parker, S Smith, G Goudie, A Evans, M Iqbal, E Chalmers, J Stander. (K Coetzer, C Wallace and F Watts replace M Iqbal, S Smith and E Chalmers for World Cricket League fixtures v Canada on 9 and 11 July).
