Change of fortune would suit Watson

GEORGE Watson has been in charge of rugby at Boroughmuir HS for the past 16 years and tomorrow afternoon the former Scotland B lock is hoping to chalk up his first victory over Glasgow Academy.

The sides meet in the fourth round of the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools Cup at Meggetland (2pm) and in their three previous meetings Boroughmuir have ended up on the losing side.

Watson, who has also captained and coached Boroughmuir, believes his boys can make it fourth time lucky. "We've lost only once this season, though quite a few games have been called off because of the weather."

Among the boys Watson, who also coaches his club's under-18 team, is looking to lead the victory charge, are wing/centre Cameron Roscoe and lock William Kay, members of the Edinburgh Under-17 squad, and scrum-half Murray Buchan.

Two other fourth round ties will also be decided this week, with Bell Baxter HS at home to Hutchesons' GS tomorrow, while Douglas Academy and Bearsden Academy join forces for cup rugby and await North Berwick HS on Thursday afternoon (1:30pm).

Meanwhile, Fettes College host Glasgow HS tomorrow in the first of the fifth round ties to go ahead. Fettes are in the middle of a hectic programme, having lost 29-20 to Merchiston Castle on Saturday, playing their cup tie tomorrow, and then on Saturday they entertain Dollar Academy (2:30pm) in the annual game for the Colin Mackay Memorial Trophy.

Spearheading Fettes' charge is talented scrum-half and head of school Sam Hunt, also an under-age cricket international who is hoping to go to Cambridge University.

Fettes and Glasgow HS actually clashed last Tuesday in their traditional game when the Edinburgh school emerged triumphant by 38-24. "Our guys are going well just now and looking forward to all those big games coming up," admitted coach Duncan Harrison.
