Champions carry Capital hopes

TWO reigning Scottish national boxing champions will spearhead Capital hopes of Eastern title glory tomorrow in the annual District championships at Crossgates British Legion club, writes BRIAN DONALD.

At light-heavyweight, Leith Victoria will field big-punching Dr Tom Carter, while yet another Leith Vics medic, Alistair Hardie, will be chasing the welterweight crown, although he will face stiff competition from Midlothian's Scott Freeman.

Similarly, Gilmerton Scottish light-welterweight champion John Thain looks to be favourite to grab the ten-stone crown, while another former Gilmerton champion, featherweight Steve Tiffany, will be making a ring comeback at the Fife show in the colours of coach Terry McCormack's Lochend club.

McCormack said: "Steve Tiffany has been sparring hard with former WBO super-featherweight champion Alex Arthur in the lead up to the championships and he has looked really sharp and impressive."

Ex-Scottish youth champion Tiffany's chances have been enhanced by the news that former Eastern featherweight champion Dave Cowan is stepping down to bantamweight for Sparta, who will also have lightweight Brian Lacey seeking a title.

The action at Crossgates is due to start at 1.00pm.
