Canoeing: Phillips falls short in quest
EDINBURGH'S Robert Phillips failed to succeed Olympic silver medallist canoeist David Florence as Scottish slalom champion at Grandtully in Perthshire yesterday.
While his friend and Forth Canoe Club team-mate Florence was enjoying a holiday in the United States, Phillips clocked the quickest time on the opening run in the C1 Canadian class.
But Denny's Adam Marshall improved dramatically on run two, and Phillips admitted: "David being out opened things up, but I just didn't hold it together on the second run." He eventually had to settle for bronze with Aaron Cruickshank pipping him for silver by just 0.1 seconds.
In other events, Bridge of Allan's 2004 Olympic silver medallist Campbell Walsh dominated the K1 kayak final. Walsh won by more than ten seconds from C2 doubles specialist Tim Baillie of Aberdeen. Crieff's Fiona Pennie took double gold in the K1 and C1 categories.
