Campbell's double win sets him up for Commonwealth task
EDINBURGH'S Martin Campbell, 18, who will play for Scotland in the Commonwealth Youth Games in India this month, will head for international duty as proud holder of two titles from the Bank of Scotland Scottish Under-19 badminton championships at Meadowbank.
In the singles final, he beat Troon's Angus Gilmour 21-19, 21-10. They then teamed up to win the doubles 21-14, 21-16 against Longniddry duo Paul Van Rietvelde and Craig Pollock.
Campbell missed out on a hat-trick when he and Catriona Lawlor (Cumbernauld) lost to defending champions Van Rietvelde and Gillian Sloan (Glasgow) in three games in the mixed.
Kirsty Gilmour (Bothwell), who is only 15, showed her great potential by winning both the under-19 singles and doubles. She defeated shock finalist Kirsten Geals (Mauchline) 21-10, 21-11 in the singles and the pair then teamed up to claim the doubles.
In the under-15 Championships, Stewart Ferns (Dingwall) was an impressive double winner in the singles and doubles, while Rebekka Findlay (Erskine) took the girls' singles.
Campbell, Angus Gilmour, Van Rietvelde and Pollock will all play for Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games, starting in Pune, India, a week today.
