Campbell just misses out
MURRAYFIELD'S Colin Campbell and his curling team-mates came close to pulling off a famous victory at the Bern Open in Switzerland, writes LORIN McDOUGALL.
While Lockerbie's double world champion and Olympic favourite David Murdoch crashed out in the quarter-finals, the third-string Scottish squad of Campbell, Logan Gray (Stirling), Richard Woods (Lockerbie) and Perth skip Pete Loudon won all five of their matches en route to the semi-finals.
There they lost 6-4 to Norwegian Thomas Ulsrud whom they had previously beaten 5-3 in the qualifying rounds. Ulsrud went on to lift the title with a 7-6 victory over 2007 winner Russ Howard from Canada.
Campbell will be back in Switzerland for another tournament next month and is also preparing for the Edinburgh International on home ice in late-November.
