Calum Menzies shocks top seed to take title
CALUM Menzies was the surprise winner of the men's singles at the Yonex Scottish National Championships in Perth yesterday.
Menzies took the title by beating top seed Kieran Merrilees (Glasgow) 21-16, 21-16 in the final.
Inverness-born Menzies combines his training commitments with a full-time job as a mechanical fitter at the Grangemouth oil refinery. "I would love to be full-time but it's not financially feasible," said the 22-year-old.
Now he is hoping that his win might attract some further financial support and even a first Scottish cap.
"I've never played for Scotland so that would be fantastic," said Menzies.
There were no such shocks in the women's event with Susan Egelstaff claiming the title for a fifth time, beating fellow Glaswegian Linda Sloan 21-13, 21-16.
In the doubles, Imogen Bankier took both the women's title with Emma Mason and the mixed crown with Watson Briggs.
