Calcutta Cup a traditional finale in pre-war era

SCOTLAND'S rugby history can boast a few isolated peaks. England's, by comparison, contains several mountain ranges.

While there have been three Scottish Grand Slams, for instance – 1925, 1984 and 1990 – England have achieved that feat no less than a dozen times. Scotland have won the Triple Crown on ten occasions: England on 23.

In deference to the Scotland-England match's status as the oldest on the international calendar, it was invariably the last game of the season for both teams during the early decades of the championship.

As a result, there were several occasions on which the Triple Crown was on the line for both sides.

After France entered the tournament in 1908 to make it the Five Nations, they were, at times, England's last opponents. Even so, there were often years in which Scotland were the last team to stand between the English and a clean sweep.

England's very first Triple Crown came in 1883, when they beat the previously undefeated Scotland by two tries to one at Raeburn Place.

The visitors fielded six backs to the home team's five, and according to a report put on "an exhibition of passing the like of which has never previously been seen here".

The following year was another Triple Crown decider, and England won this one too, by a goal to a try. Eight years on, with the Triple Crown again at stake, the English also emerged victorious, by a goal to nil.

It was not until a year before the First World War that England won their fourth Triple Crown, but they made up for the lapse of time by taking their first Grand Slam as well. And they did so with a 3-0 win over Scotland, who had less to play for having already lost to Wales.

In 1914, Scotland lost all three of their matches – they did not play against France. England beat Scotland 16-15 at Inverleith on 21 March, and clinched the slam the following month with a 39-13 win in Paris.

The 1920s were a golden decade for English rugby, with four Grand Slams being won. In 1921 and 1923, France were England's last opponents, but in 1924 and 1928 that was Scotland's fate.

The Triple Crowns of 1934 and 1937 were also secured by victory over the Scots. In both cases the score was 6-3.

England Triple Crowns before the Second World War: 1883, 1884, 1892, 1913, 1914, 1921, 1923, 1924, 1928, 1934, 1937.
