Burgeoning Watson’s savour more glory

HOCKEY: Earlier this month, George Watson’s 1st XI retained the Scottish Schools’ Cup – the next generation has indicated similar promise by winning the East District Tournament at Goldenacre.

The side beat Linlithgow Academy, North Berwick High, Balerno High and Mary Erskine’s in the pool matches. In the semi-finals, Mairi Shaw and Emma Speirs scored the goals for Watson’s in a 2-0 win over St George’s. In a repeat of last year’s final, Watson’s and George Heriot’s were locked together at 1-1 after normal time in the final.

So it came down to running penalties. Some great saves by Charlie Dickens and goals from Claire Hilton and Cara McNaughton secured victory for Watson’s.

The final was the only defeat of the season for Heriot’s. This season, the second year A team has won 14 matches, drawn two and scored 60 goals.
