Broadfoot hopeful Ferguson will stay

KIRK Broadfoot hopes Rangers fans have done enough to convince Barry Ferguson to stay at Ibrox next season.

Deposed captain Ferguson has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the club and former Rangers manager Alex McLeish yesterday confirmed his interest in bringing the midfielder to Birmingham this summer.

Ferguson, 31, still has a year left on his Rangers contract but his Ibrox career looked over in April thanks to his role in the infamous 'Boozegate' saga. He returned to play a part in a thrilling end to the season which saw the club clinch the double and led to Ferguson being cheered to the rafters by supporters.

Full-back Broadfoot said today: "It's up to him and if he does stay, I think every player here is happy for him to do that. Barry's a good player, he's been a great servant to the club but if he does go, he goes in the best way possible he can by winning the double.

"With the way Barry finished the league and the reception he got from the fans, he might turn around and say, 'I want to stay'. But it's up to him."

Broadfoot is also out of contract next summer and his agent has been trying to secure an improved deal. The Scotland defender said: "I get the feeling that I'm wanted here. I've been told that. I don't see me moving in the near future."

&#149 The Scottish Football Association yesterday confirmed their General Purposes Committee discussed a complaint from Aberdeen earlier this month about Rangers and Celtic making illegal approaches for young players. However, the allegation was found to be unproven.
