British title shot for Paul
SOUTH Queensferry featherweight Paul Appleby will challenge John Simpson for the British title.
Appleby's manager Tommy Gilmour has confirmed the unbeaten youngster will take on Greenock boxer Simpson – probably in April or May.
Explained Gilmour: "Irish fighter Martin Lindsay has agreed to waive his right to fight Appleby in an eliminator, which was due to take place on my February 29 show in Glasgow, due to him facing an operation on his teeth.
"However, Lindsay has accepted my idea that he will get first crack at Paul for the title if Appleby beats Simpson, so now the road is clear for Paul. I honestly believe Appleby has the punchpower that Simpson lacks and can become a British champion. No venue or date have been finalised although it will mean that Paul will not now fight later this month in Glasgow as planned and the clash with Simpson will take place in either April or May."
Appleby said: "This is great news. Now I'll be upping my training schedule – I really fancy my chances against Simpson.''
