Boxing: Young finds wisdom in return home
EDINBURGH welterweight Gary Young has returned to the Capital for treatment after infected wisdom teeth caused the postponement of his American ring debut.
Young, of Gilmerton, had been set to face American opponent Tony Hirsch last week in San Jose, California, before his dental problems took hold.
"The cost of dental treatment for my wisdom teeth operation would have been prohibitive in Los Angeles where I am based," explained Young. "So I came home and had the teeth removed and I'm now recuperating.
"But my partner has just also handed me a tonic by telling me that I am going to become a dad for the first time. However, I would like to stress that my fight with Tony Hirsch has just been postponed – it will go ahead in San Jose once I've recovered fully."
Meanwhile, undefeated middleweight Craig McEwan has also returned to the Capital after the California Boxing Commission temporarily suspended his license after he suffered a seven-stitch cut injury in his last winning fight with American Darnell Boone.
Confirmed McEwan: "As I can't box for the next six weeks my partner Sal and I decided to come back to Edinburgh where I will be training at my Dad's Clovenstone gym in Wester Hailes.
"I had a long career talk with my promoter Oscar De La Hoya and the target will be two more fights, starting on September 18 in Las Vegas then a bid for an American title by the end of 2009."
