Boxing: McMillan did not break hand

EDINBURGH boxer Gary McMillan did not break his hand when he floored Alex Spitko on his way to a points victory against the Latvian in Glasgow on Friday.

The Lochend gym welterweight complained of pains in his left hand after decking Spitko at Bellahouston, fighting on the undercard of the Ricky Burns super-featherweight Commonwealth title fight.

McMillan's coach, Terry McCormack, said: "'When Gary decked Spitko with a great left hand punch he came back and said 'My hand is hurting badly' and after the fight it had ballooned up. The fight doctor said he suspected a fracture but subsequent tests have revealed that his hand is only badly bruised, which is a relief as we plan to have Gary back in ring action soon possibly in July."

Meanwhile, Gilmerton southpaw welterweight Josh Taylor and Craigmillar light-welterweight Jason Easton will be seeking gold medal glory in the Great Britain ages 1991/92 championships at Liverpool's Everton Sports Centre on Friday.
