Boxing: Lochend's Taylor impresses in London
LOCHEND lightweight Josh Taylor again won the "Best Boxer of the Tournament" award in international competition as Scotland pushed host nation England all the way in London last night, losing 4-3.
Hailing Taylor's outstanding ring performance at The Royal Lancaster Hotel, Scottish team coach Mark Geraghty said: "Josh dropped his English opponent, Marlon Mellis, in the first round with a cracking right hook then had Mellis on the defensive for the rest of the bout as he whacked him with brilliant punch combinations."
Similarly, Lochend middleweight, Tommy Philbin hit too hard and too often to outscore England's tough and gritty Jordan Dennis and Scotland's third winner, light-welterweight Elias Gear outfought England and the Army's Steve Sweeney in equally impressive style.
Queensferry boxers, bantamweight Davie Cowan and light-welter Chris McHale, both lost on points to Southampton's Adam Cutler and the Times club's George Keane, but only by narrow margins.
