Boxing: Arthur steps in to help nephew right title wrong

EDINBURGH'S ex-WBO super-featherweight champion Alex Arthur has been helping his nephew Sean Swanney train for tomorrow's Scottish Schoolboys Championships at Coatbridge.

Swanney's coach at the Lochend Club, Terry McCormack, said: "Alex, who knows a thing or two about winning amateur and pro titles, has been helping him train and also trying to motivate Sean to approach the task positively, although the competition in his category of flyweight will be intense.

"Sean was robbed of a similar title by a controversial decision at Danderhall two years ago, so he's determined to try to set the record straight tomorrow."

Arthur said: "Sean is a talented youngster and has been working hard with me in the gym. We hope, this time around, that he avoids any controversial decisions."

McCormack also has high hopes for his eastern light-flyweight champion Liam Tervit and the Craigmillar Club are equally confident that their trio of young hopefuls, light-flyweight Joe Murray, featherweight Brodie Robertson and flyweight James John Bruce, will come back east with Scottish titles.

Coach Kenny McCartney said: "They are all fired up and ready to go."

Midlothian coach Ally Quilleti is looking for his hugely-talented southpaw light-flyweight Barry Hogg to repeat his outstanding performance earlier this year in the Eastern championships. Quiletti said: "Barry stopped Alloa's James Kirk in two rounds to win his district crown – now I hope he'll do something like that in the Scottish."
