Boxing: Arthur aiming to promote and top the bill at Meadowbank show

Edinburgh's former WBO superfeatherweight champion Alex Arthur has confirmed that he has applied to the Boxing Board of Control to get a promoter's licence to enable him to stage a fight bill at Meadowbank Sports Centre on 27 August - a show on which he would top the bill as well as promote.

Arthur said: "I am keen to box at Meadowbank again, but, most importantly, I am fed up with people asking me: 'Why don't we see Edinburgh's own boxers on fight shows in the capital any more?'

"So I aim to change that and I've already spoken to my former promoter Frank Warren who has given me his blessing, so I've submitted my application for my promoter's licence.

"There's nothing new in a boxer promoting the show on which he himself boxes and tops the bill - English boxer Len Harvey promoted the show in London in 1936 where he challenged American John Henry Lewis for the world light-heavyweight title - but I want to give Edinburgh's current crop of professional boxers regular chances to fight on shows at Meadowbank promoted by me.''
