Boxing: Alex Arthur back in Warren fight stable
Edinburgh's former WBO superfeatherweight champion Alex Arthur confirmed yesterday that he has signed the contract that marks his return to the camp of his former promoter and manager Frank Warren.
The deal also guarantees that Arthur will definitely box on the Glasgow Kelvin Hall world title bill on 4 September when Coatbridge's Ricky Burns tries to win Arthur's former WBO 9st 4 lb crown at the expense of Roman Martinez.
A delighted Arthur confirmed: "My agent and chief negotiator, Alan Thomson, and I signed the new contract with Frank Warren on Thursday and I am delighted because the new contract gives me a very generous deal which allows me to get back into ring action on 4 September on the Martinez v Burns world title clash.''
"And although there is no cast-iron guarantee that I will have my stated wish of a ten-round International title bout on the Kelvin Hall bill , to be honest, I'll be quite happy with an eight rounder non- title clash as I just can't wait to get back into the ring," admitted Arthur.
"I have been trained to peak ring fitness by coach Terry McCormack at the Lochend gym and had some terrific sparring with former British featherweight champion Paul Appleby, so I am just raring to go on 4 September.''
Arthur is under no illusions about where the rest of his career lies, though - and how long he has left in the ring.
"I have now entered the last five years of my career as a pro boxer so I can't hang around. I still want to win another world title and if anybody can make that happen it is Frank Warren-although I'll have to produce a convincing performance at the Kelvin Hall, if for nothing else but to silence emphatically the 'Arthur is washed up as a boxer' brigade who wrote me off after my last ring loss at light-welterweight.''
Meanwhile, McCormack commented : "Alex Arthur has never been fitter or more hungry and fired up than he is for his 4 September ring return. Those who've written Arthur off will be in for a shock'.'
