Boxing: Ormond test for Appleby

SOUTH QUEENSFERRY’S Paul Appleby has been given a chance to re-establish himself at championship level on the undercard of WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ next world title defence against Paulus Moses, writes BRIAN DONALD.

Appleby, the former British featherweight champion, will face Steven Ormond for the vacant Celtic super-featherweight title at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena on March 10. Dubliner Ormond is unbeaten in 11 pro bouts but Appleby is confident that, despite losing his last title challenge to Commonwealth champion Liam Walsh in 2011, he can do better this time around.

He said: “I’m looking to get a good start against Ormond. He’s got an unbeaten record but I’ll be looking to change that in Glasgow.

“After putting so much in but not winning against Liam Walsh I will do everything possible to ensure my hand gets lifted at the end of the fight.’’

Frank Warren promotions hailed the Appleby-Ormond match-up by stating: “The man from South Queensferry was unfortunate to lose out to Walsh in a thrilling encounter which won trade magazine Boxing Monthly’s ‘Fight of the Year’ award, but he walked away with his head held high . .’’

Unbeaten Edinburgh cruiserweight Steve Simmons and welterweight John Thain will also box on the same Braehead bill against selected opponents.
