Boxing: Leith Vics boxer Carter faces weighty challenge

HEAVYWEIGHT Tom Carter admits that his top-of-the bill opponent on Sunday's Leith Victoria annual Spring show in Edinburgh's Masonic club – Port Glasgow's James Quigley – could be his toughest-ever ring rival.

Carter and Quigley were part of the Scottish team that boxed in Ireland last week with Quigley beating Denis Hogan who had earlier triumphed over Carter in Dublin.

Carter is also concerned that Quigley's all-action style will prove a real test. The Leith Vics boxer said: "Quigley is not only tall and strong with the heart of a lion but he is also a southpaw, which is going to make him doubly difficult to beat, but I will be going flat out to beat him.''

Leith Vics favourite Fundo Mhura is now a coach at the club and believes his protege, middleweight Graham Wright, will also become a favourite with fight fans.

Mhura said: "He is a really exciting new prospect, well capable of following in my footsteps by winning a Scottish title, but on Sunday he will tackle Stewart Melville's Cameron Hunter who stopped St Andrews University's Mike Payne in his last fight last week, so it should be an interesting scrap.''

Leith Vics coach Jack Graham also advised fans to look out for another exciting Vics club newcomer on Sunday – middleweight Liam Whyte. "Liam knocked out his last opponent from Dundee in the first round in Arbroath last weekend and he's itching to do likewise against whoever he finds himself facing on Sunday.''

&#149 A STRONG contingent of Lochend and Craigmillar boxers will fight on the Hawick Amateur boxing club bill in Hawick Rugby club on Friday.

The event will also see the competitive debut of the new South Queensferry club, with Edinburgh southpaw lightweight, Stuart Blackie, becoming the first boxer to wear the club's vest in the ring. Lochend light-fly Sean Swanney gets an early chance for revenge against Zetland's Bradley Stewart who controversially outpointed him at Alloa last weekend, while David Dickson, the nephew of Hibs legend Mickey Weir, will be trying to win his seventh-straight bout when he clashes with Kelty's Connor Law.

The Craigmillar boxers are light-flyweights James Carter and Lee McEwan and Joe Murray.
