Boxing: Derby bouts on cards at Ravenscraig
SOME intriguing derby clashes could be on the cards at tomorrow’s Scottish Intermediate Boxing Championships at Ravenscraig Sports Centre in Motherwell.
In the senior lightweight class, reigning 60kgs Eastern District champion, Lewis Paulin from Meadowbank, could find himself taking on either of Lochend pair Ian Keys or Craig Thomson.
At welterweight, Leith Victoria pair Colin Currie and Gregor Korsak, face a challenge for title glory from city rivals Owen Spence, Scott Blair and Mark Brown from the Meadowbank, Holyrood and Clovenstone clubs respectively. Leith Vics coach Ray Gibson admitted: “Spence and Brown could be big obstacles to my boxers progressing to titles.”
At middleweight, East Lothian club coach, Hamish Colgan, thinks his 75kgs entry Ian Trotter is a good shout for a title. “Ian is one of my most improved prospects and, although he could face a tough fight from Scott Blair and a couple of fighters from the Aberdeen area, I won’t be surprised if he comes back with the title.”
Meanwhile, Clovenstone lightheavyweight Pieyam Khosrowpour could come up against Leith Victoria’s Connor Brown.
In the Youth 1994 lightweight class, East Lothian’s Martin Buist will have a straight final tussle with Aberdonian Jordan Pirie of the Granite City’s Kincorth club, while Holyrood’s David Smylie will carry hopes of title success in the 91kgs heavyweight division.
Tranent Bronx club’s Shaun Cunningham will contest the dual 57 and 60kgs championships in the Junior 1997 category as the sole eastern entry at these weights.
Boxing will start around 1pm.
