Boxing: Annual Leith Victoria show is a mouthwatering prospect

Tasty light-heavyweight ring clashes and intriguing rematches are the dominant theme of the annual Leith Victoria club amateur boxing show at the Edinburgh Masonic club in Shrubhill on Sunday.

It is a show that has cult status among local amateur boxing fans, and, according to Leith Vics match-maker Ray Gibson, it has been sold out for more than a week.

And it’s not hard to see why, given bouts like the bill-topping clash matching Holyrood’s newly crowned Eastern champion Brian Forsyth with his western counterpart from Renfrew, Mike Atkinson.

“Forsyth and Atkinson are both hard punchers and good boxers, so this should be a treat for fans,” said Gibson.

And yet another intriguing light-heavyweight tussle is the bout between Clovenstone’s Pyam Khosrowpour and Richard Snaith, son of former Haddington club star Richard Snaith.

Khosrowpour: “I’m still hurting after being controversially outpointed in the Eastern championships last month, so I am aiming to reassert myself by turning in a great performance against Snaith that will leave no room for doubt that I’m the winner this time.”

Similarly, the fans love rematches, and the middleweight scrap between the Leith host club’s Gregor Korsak and Chirnside’s Steve Williamson promises to be a cracker, according to Gibson.

“The last time these two fought the verdict was so close to call, but Korsak believes he can win even more decisively this time.

“I also think that the welterweight bout between Scottish internationalists Chris Givan and Renfrew’s Stuart Burt will be a cracker. These guys are crowd pleasers with loads of heart.”
