Boxing: Lochend star Taylor puts on a brave show despite loss in World Series

Amateur boxer Josh Taylor suffered a narrow defeat on Saturday debuting for the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) third round fixture to Astana
Arlans Kazakhstan, writes NEIL McGLADE.

Lightweight Taylor, 21, faced highly rated Kazak Yerzhan Mussafirov in the second of five bouts for the British franchise, who lost the tie convincingly 5-0 at the Almaty Sports Palace.

The Lochend star certainly put up a comprehensive showing with some good shots of his own, but the three judges deemed Mussafirov to have had the overall edge and declared him victorious.

The result drops the British Lionhearts down into third place in Group B with their next fixture against German Eagles at Earl’s Court in London on Friday. Taylor, however, will not be involved in the squad, but will return to the fold in the new year.
