Boxing: Lochend able to revel in show success

Lochend Amateur Boxing’s annual club show proved to be a hit with some of the most closely contested match-ups providing a great evening of
entertainment.

The show, which took place last Friday at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange, was a huge success according to Lochend mentor Terry McCormack, whose pre-match billing that some of the bouts were “too close to call” proved to be spot on.

McCormack said: “It was a great night with some
really fantastic fights. It ended up 5-5 overall so we won half the fights.

“There were some tight calls where on another night they could have gone the other way. People who have been in touch have all said it was a great show with 50/50 fights and some
really good matchmaking.

McCormack was pleased with the character shown by
several of his Lochend boxers but singled out Stephen Tiffney’s display as one of the
main highlights from the evening.

“A dominant performance from the 21-year-old, Tiffney was rewarded with a major scalp in defeating Greenock’s Robbie McKechnie who is currently involved in the GB development squad.

Meanwhile, Lochend’s Lewis Benson will begin his bid for a gold medal tomorrow when he represents Scotland in the
annual Tammer Tournament
in the Finnish city of Tampere.

Benson, the current Scottish and British champion at 64kg, will be aiming to add to his achievements this year when he faces the first, of a possible four bouts, should he progress to the final of this year’s knockout competition.

Benson goes into his fight coming off the back of a
defeat in his own club show last
Friday after losing to Chris Given of Heriot-Watt, but the 20-year-old admits he is firmly focused on the job in hand.

“I’m really excited about it and want to prove my worth to the team.” Benson said. “I want to mix it with the best fighters in the world. It’s going to
be really tough as some of the opponents will have been to the Olympics and are real top
fighters.

“But I will be there to give it my all and on my day I know I can win.”
