Boxing: Queensferry Boxing Club to cross the border by special invite from Glenn McCrory
FORMER IBF Cruiserweight champion Glenn McCrory has invited South Queensferry Boxing Club to provide the opposition at his next show in County Durham.
McCrory was a guest at Easter Road at the weekend when his heavyweight prospect Shaz Hussain lost a narrow points decision to Hawick's Sean Allison.
And he was so impressed by the welcome he and his boxer received from the show's host, Queensferry club boss Mark Geraghty, he has invited the club south for his next event on 1 February.
Geraghty said: "The Easter Road show was a sell out and although McCrory's boxer lost on a majority decision, the show was a triumph for Queensferry boxers with five out of seven winning against tough opposition."
Queensferry's outstanding prospect Liam Tervit beat Midlothian's Scott Brown on points and there were good wins for Matt McHale and Sean Spence.
Geraghty added: "Even though Davie Cowan lost his bantamweight scrap narrowly against Fifer Antony Bilan, it was a good warm up for Davie, who boxes for Scotland against England B in London next week."
Meanwhile, Leith Victoria's Scottish heavyweight champion Steve Simmons is cock-a-hoop after beating America's third-best amateur heavyweight, Lamar Fenner from Chicago, by a massive 20-6 margin in a Great Britain v US match.
Simmons said: "My left jab worked really well and Fenner couldn't cope with it. I was the British team captain and I felt that I had to lead by example. The 7-1 victory margin for Britain suggests that my team-mates took a leaf out of my book."
