Boxing: Magnificent Mackintosh too hot for Hutchison in Leith

TEN-TIMES London Road Foundry champion Scott Mackintosh produced a superb display to beat Goldenacre's Colin Hutchison 21-7 at Leith BC and reach the Singles final of the District 11 national championships.

Hutchison – a junior cap and Tait Trophy champion in 2006 – struggled to match the form of an opponent who has reached two Tait finals as Mackintosh opened up a 10-4 lead then powered to 16-7 before adding a 3,2 finish to win in 15-ends.

The District 11 finals take place at Hillside on Friday night and the opposition to Mackintosh comes in the shape of 2005 national junior singles champion Andrew Caldwell of Craigentinny.

Caldwell dominated his semi final against David Scott of Niddrie having added 2, 1, 2, 2, to lead 13-3 and going on to complete a 21-6 triumph in 17-ends.

Goldenacre did have reason to celebrate last night and the player to deliver was Nicky Brown in the Junior Singles, who made telling space from 12-10 to 17-10 before dealing a 21-13 exit to Ian Duncan of Craigentinny in 20 ends.

The other semi-final was an absolute cracker won by former District champion Chris Steven of Pilrig, who burnt the jack at 19-19 and game against then carded a 2 to 21 on the replay to deny Gary Muir of Hillside.

The Fours was also down for decision last night and a 17-16 nail-biter saw Keith Gallacher, Brian Irving, Graham Laidlaw and Kevin Moncur give Hillside victory over Willowbrae's Graham Sinclair, Richard Dimelow, Gary Craig and Derek Lavin.

Queensberry led 11-0 and the rink of Mike Bow, Frank Burns Peter Lynch and Sid Robertson converted that into a 10-14 win over Craig Sandilands, Alistair Henzell, George Smith and Euan Murray of Postal.
