Boxing: Long road to Glasgow 2014 begins in Academy Street
LEITH VICTORIA'S Academy Street gym will be the launchpad next week for young boxers bidding to take part in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
Scottish National Youth boxing coach Peter Harrison will be in attendance between January 24 and 28 to assess local boxing propects.
"I know people may react by saying 'the 2014 games – already?' but the truth is that real, natural, ring talent is ageless," he explained. "Once I spot any boys with outstanding potential as I put them through working on the punch pad and sparring sessions then I will aim them for a progressive programme of boxing development.'' Next on Harrison's calendar is a trip to Danderhall on Saturday, however, for the Eastern District Youth and Junior finals.
"I will be assessing boxers in the upper age groups with leading official Jimmy Dunn with a view to noting possible contenders for the World Amateur Youth championships in Baku, Azerbaijan in April this year and the Singapore Youth Olympic Games in August," he explained.
Dunn endorsed Harrison's claims, saying: "I expect that to fire up many of the boxers involved on Saturday.''
