Boxing: Lochend prodigy Cowan faces test against Warner
LOCHEND Boxing Club's middleweight hope Chris Cowan faces a tough test of his Scottish championship credentials against Philip Warner in Lanark tonight.
Warner, of the local Springhill club, is regarded by many as the favourite for the title. And Lochend coach Terry McCormack said: "Chris hasn't got Warner's overall championship experience but his confidence has been boosted by his winning performance at the championship prelims last week when he stopped Leith Victoria's Darren Yorston."
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Scottish youth championships at Cardenden in Fife will see a strong representation from Capital clubs.
Gilmerton's British lightweight youth champion Connor McCallum is favourite to win another title against Dunfermline opponent Alex Miller. Gilmerton club boss Rab Young said: "Connor should be too good for Miller and I also expect featherweight Josh Taylor to beat Glenboig's Adam McPhee."
Young predicted, however, that welterweight Scott Eng will have a tough task against Alloa's Josh Barnes, who has had many more fights. Craigmillar lightweight Lewis Benson, who had an excellent win over Scottish internationalist Jordan McCorry in the prelims, is confident that he can beat Kilsyth's Derek Skinner.
Outstanding Craigmillar light-welterweight Jason Easton faces Fauldhouse rival, Robbie McKee who recently knocked out a Finnish Olympic ten-stone contender in 70 seconds in Finland.
Boxing at the championships at Bowhill War Memorial club will commence around 1.00pm.
