Boxing: Kubas told to be wary of Dundonian's revenge hit

QUEENSFERRY heavyweight Jacki Kubas was today warned to avoid expecting an easy passage to the Scottish Senior amateur boxing championship finals by coach Mark Geraghty.

Kubas will spearhead the East team in the semi-finals at Coatbridge on Friday night when he faces Dundee's David Drummond, whom he beat convincingly two years ago.

However, since that fight, Kubas took a break from boxing while Drummond has sharpened his skills during a series of tough bouts.

Geraghty said: "I've told Jacki not to get too confident because he outscored Drummond a couple of years ago as he has been relatively inactive for the last two years while Drummond is a much-improved boxer because he has been in regular action.

"We won't be taking anything for granted. Kubas will have to be at the top of his game but, with his punch power, anything can happen.''

Craigmillar club coach Kenny McCartney is equally cautious about Jason Easton's victory prospects against Ayrshire's Jamie Kerr in another semi-final.

He said: "This is Jason Easton's very first senior championship semi-final appearance and he has never fought Irvine's Kerr before.

"The Ayrshire boxer is a bit of an unknown quantity to us but, nevertheless, Jason has had some good sparring with boxers in our club and he will be going all out to win a place in the finals later this month.''

Reigning Eastern and Scottish champion Darren Reid from Alloa (middleweight) faces a stiff test from Barrhead's Brian Peacock while Fife boxers Tony Bilan (bantamweight) and Sean Finney (middleweight) are joined by Denbeath heavyweight John Cook in the East team bidding to reach the finals at Coatbridge on Friday, 26 March.
