Boxing: Fine Appleby routs Vasilev

Queensferry's ex-British featherweight champion Paul Appleby destroyed Bulgarian Yordan Vasilev in two sensational rounds at the Kelvin Hall

It was a victory down to Appleby's awesome, rib-bending left body hooks and some Lochend gym camaraderie.

That camarederie came from Alex Arthur, who scorned showering after his fight to sit, still sweating, at ringside and shout to his gym mate Appleby to throw left body hooks and straight right hands.

Consequently, in the first round Appleby dumped the hapless Vasilev on the canvas for an eight count with a fierce body shot.

Come the second round and Appleby took just 59 seconds to finish off Vasilev with yet another crushing left hook to the body.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh light-middleweight John Thain made it a hat trick of Edinburgh ring wins on the night by winning every round against Wishaw's Paddy Pollok, smoothly boxing his way to a 40-36 points win.

The former Leith Victoria amateur star used his smart left jab to great effect.
