Boxing: Cypriots shrugged off by East

A SCOTTISH east select team defeated a squad from Cypriot club Aravis 6-1 courtesy of outstanding performances from boxers from Leith Victoria, Fauldhouse and the host club Glenrothes at the Gilvanbank Hotel last night.

Leith Victoria welterweight and student doctor Alistair Hardie clinically counter-punched his way to a unanimous points win over Limassol-based Kyriakos Yiankou.

Fauldhouse middleweight Mike McGregor scored his fifth consecutive first-round knockout win when he brutally blew away guest fighter John Whyte in just 42 seconds to put the Scots team 3-1 ahead. Hometown fans were thrilled by the fierce punching of Canadian medical student and all-action welterweight, Feeser Kassam, all over another guest boxer, Scott McKay, to make his own contribution to the overall convincing victory.

However, but for errant judges' scoring, the true margin should have been 7-0 as Fauldhouse bantamweight James Armstrong looked to have beaten Achillias Vasilo comfortably on points only to lose a majority decision.

Glenrothes' international lightweight champion Aaron McKelvie rounded off a triumphant evening for the host club by stopping Cypriot Titinidze Giorgi in the third round.
