Boxing: Change of plan for Kenny Anderson as title eliminator bout nears

CELTIC super-middleweight champion Kenny Anderson has been handed a change of venue and opponent for his first fight under the guidance of Irish former world champion Barry McGuigan.

The Edinburgh boxer faces a warm-up six rounder on 29 November before he fights Sheffield's Paul David in January in an eliminator for the British 12-stone crown.

Anderson's ring coach Kevin Marra confirmed: "Anderson will fight on 29 November at Colne, Lancashire – not Cleethorpes as previously announced – and he will clash over six rounds with experienced Welshman Jamie Ambler, who will give Anderson a decent test ahead of his 'Burns Night' British eliminator with Paul David in Glasgow.

"I've told Anderson that Paul David will be the toughest guy he has ever faced but we are still confident he will win."

Meanwhile, former boxers Willie Quinn and Alex Brown have accelerated the opening date for their new gym in Tranent to 1 December after they received an overwhelming response to their plea in the Evening News for new members for their "Bronx" club.

Confirmed Brown: "We were astonished to receive 84 serious enquiries from both men and women to join our new club in just two days after our appeal appeared in the paper so now we have brought forward our grand opening from January. We are asking top eastern pro-am boxing coach George Bordon, who helped flyweight Keith Knox win a British title in 1999 and also guided Willie Quinn to titles, to formally open the gym. George has never received the recognition his coaching achievements deserve so this is belated – but richly deserved – recognition for him."
