Boxing: Amateur deal for Simmons
STEVE SIMMONS cemented his intention to secure a place at the 2012 Olympics when the Leith Vics boxer signed a contract with Britain's Olympic boxing chiefs which will keep him in the amateur ranks until 2014.
Leith Vics club leader Douglas Fraser, who witnessed the Scottish amateur heavyweight champion penning the deal in his own home, said: "This deal could be potentially lucrative to Steve as it contains a clause that will guarantee him 18,000 if he wins an Olympic gold in 2010.
"Another factor in ensuring that Simmons will now remain an amateur boxer at least until 2014 is that we at Leith Victoria have obtained for him a personal sponsorship deal worth 2,000 for two local companies – the Dovehill Arms pub and the Dechmont Fork Lift Truck company."
Simmons was thrilled with both his new contract and his personal sponsorship deal. He said: "I can now concentrate on boxing and achieving my goal of an Olympic place without worrying about financial matters."
