Bowls: Pumped-up Portobello kick sand in the faces of Fintry
PORTOBELLO'S bid to escape the basement level of the national indoor bowls leagues continues at terrific pace with the team making great waves in a campaign that has produced a super six wins in a row in Division 2B.
Their latest success to make it 12 points out of 12 also boosted the sometimes vital shot margin bank as the league leaders travelled to Fintry and crushed their relegation-zoned opponents 106-52.
"This result means we have maintained our four-point gap over Cumbernauld, who themselves had a big win over Allander (+40) but we have increased the shot margin difference between us to 28 and that could be worth another point," said Porty spokesman Andrew Caldwell. Porty's win at Fintry was justifying the form book so no great plaudits there, however the visitors can enthuse over the fact that all four of their rinks, skipped by David Brown, Ian Fleming, John McDermott and Caldwell contributed winning performances achieved in commanding double-figure style.
The opening seven-end phase of the match was hard fought but Portobello edged it 26-20. Then the visitors moved into top gear and accelerated to a 45-15 success on the second and a 35-17 consolidation on the third.
It was a high-scoring day in Division 2B with Cumbernauld crushing foot-of-the-table Allander 98-58 and joint second-place Headwell demolishing Teviotdale 102-67.
