Bowls: Kirkliston aim to retain title in final
Reigning national Top Ten champions Kirkliston will bid to retain the White Knights-sponsored West Lothian title when tackling Newbridge in the final at Uphall Station tomorrow (2pm).
The key battle in the Singles pitches 56-year-old former national champion Raymond Logan against 49-year-old Alec Allan, who has the County title and a British Isles Pairs crown on his CV.
Logan buzzed into a 16-1 lead over David Ledgerwood of Buchan Park in this week's semi-final action and went to convert his domination into a 21-9 victory that set up a 6-2 progress into the final.
Allan was a 21-20 hero in his Singles match, finishing 2, 1 to pip Derek Wardrop of Pumpherston and set up a 6-2 victory.
The final will also be spiced up by a confrontation between the Speirs brothers, with Neil skipping Steven Forrest for Kirkliston and James skipping Drew Paterson for Newbridge in the Pairs.
John Aitken skips David Masterton and Calum Logan against Stuart Affleck. Paul Sweeney and Thomas Mann in the Triples, while it's Andy Suddon, Gordon Logan, Greg Logan and Grant Logan against Jas Aitken, Ian Robertson, Jim Speirs and Blair Mackie in the Fours.
Meanwhile, the finals of the ladies East of Scotland Championships, played at Brunstane, saw world stage and former South Africa star Lorna Smith of Linlithgow retain the Singles title with a 21-11 win over Doreen Reeder of Kirkliston.
And the champagne corks were popping at the Braid club, with Jane Meikle skipping Isobel Graham, Margaret Strachan and Margaret Forsyth to the Fours title at the expense of Ladybank.
But Anne Watson and Marion Dickson of Bainfield lost out in the Pairs and there was also disappointment for Marie Glasgow, Nan Lake and Isobel Anderson of Mayfield in the Triples.
The final of the Evening News Triples, played at Sighthill, saw former Edinburgh Open champion Shona Johnstone of Tipperlinn skip Brenda Little and Pat Murray to the title with a good win over Leith.
