Bowls: David Peacock pulls out to look after ill mother

Title favourite David Peacock conceded his last-16 match to Denny's Stuart Hogg in the Prostate Cancer Charity Bowls Scotland singles championship in dramatic circumstances at Ayr Northfield yesterday.

Peacock, who has lost in the final twice, looked to be struggling with a back injury and found himself 15-1 down after just end ends. He battled gallantly and clawed his way back to be 19-11 off the pace. However, at that point his mother Margaret took ill, paramedics had to be called and as she was taken from the rinkside her son decided to put her first and called time on his match. She later recovered sufficiently to travel home.

Peacock said later: "I couldn't have played on knowing that my mother was ill. I was struggling too. I was fine when I went onto the green but early doors I just felt in pain." Hogg will face Eddlewood's Alex Kelly in the quarter-finals today.
