Bowls: Newly-promoted Leith get off to a flyer
LEITH came up from Division 2 of the Alpha Trophies Edinburgh Bowling League as champions ahead of Wardie and grabbed the headlines in last night's opening action in Division 1 by scoring a 7-2 win over Pilrig.
Wardie were also pleased with their opening performance as, although it was a 6-3 defeat at home to Craigentinny, it came close to being better and banking points against the defending champions is viewed as a plus.
Tanfield look strong for this campaign and, although they dropped points, the record six-times champions will be enthused by their 6-3 away win over Goldenacre while 2007 champions Parkside opened with a 7-2 home win over Hillside.
Leith made their mark with wins for the rinks skipped by John Ramsay, Drew Dodds and Archie Davidson and, although all single-digit successes, their 12-shot accumulation was good enough to cover the six-shot defeat of Robert Wood and so earn the bonus point.
Pilrig – champions in 1998 and 2008 – managed to get a couple of points in the bag with David Poole cashing in on a great 2, 3, 4 start to skip Darren McArdle, Graeme Hislop and Euan Craig to an 18-12 win over Wood.
