Nicola Sturgeon backs macaroni pie campaign

Nicola Sturgeon today told MSPs at Holyrood she has joined the campaign to save the macaroni pie.

The First Minister revealed she is not a fan of the delicacy - but was acting on orders from her dad.

Bakery chain Greggs announced it was axing the pie after falling sales and growing popularity of Mediterranean and Asian inspired dishes.

“I am not a lover of the macaroni pie,” Ms Sturgeon said during First Ministers Questions today.

“However, my father is - and I got a stern talking to on the telephone last night from my father who told me that he expected me to join the campaign to save the macaroni pie.

“So I’ve always been an obedient and loyal daughter and this occasion is no different.”

Hundreds of fans of the pie signed a petition calling for it to be re-instated by Greggs.

The First Minister had also been urged to get behind the campaign by Labour leadership hopeful Kezia Dugdale on social media.

The campaign has won the backing of vegetarians including Taggart actor Colin McCredie who tweeted: “That’s it you’re chucked @GreggsOfficial #disgrace #savethepie.”
