Barnes to combine new SRU role with coaching job at Accies

NEW Scottish Rugby Council member Ian Barnes today insisted his elevation would not affect a commitment to continue coaching Edinburgh Accies.

The 60-year-old had hinted that he might step down as a coach, but it appeared today this week's election result for the Premiership Division One slot had rejuvenated him even more. "I don't see any problem combining coaching Accies with serving on the council," said Barnes, a retired accountant who confirmed he is hoping to gain further promotion to the board of Scottish Rugby where no-one of extensive playing or coaching experience currently sits.

So far as Accies are concerned Barnes believes there is plenty to build on having consolidated a place back in the top flight.

Barnes, who revealed he will have some assistance on the sidelines from newly retired Scotland flanker Donnie Macfadyen, added: "To retain our place despite using 53 players throughout was satisfying. Not only that but we finished the season beating Heriot's at Goldenacre scoring three tries to nil."

Barnes' optimism partly stems from the likely arrival on the scene of highly rated schoolboys Alex Blair (stand-off) and Tom Brown (full back/wing). Also, Accies are known to be monitoring the availability of former Scotland full back Stuart Moffat who might return to his original club once a contract at Italian side Viadana expires.

Meantime Barnes' is mainly pinning hopes for a successful 2008-09 on major contributions from current hooker Mark Price and influential centre Iain Berthinussen who spent much of last term injured.
