Badminton: MacPherson adds U17 title to collection

Edinburgh’s Julie MacPherson won the National Under-15 badminton singles title earlier in the season – now she has completed a great double by adding the Under-17 title in the end of season Scottish Junior Championships at Meadowbank.

The Royal High School pupil was unseeded, but she beat big sister and No.3 seed, Heather, 21-15, 21-10 in the semi-finals, and then continued the giant-killing act with a 20-22, 21-18, 21-16 triumph over Motherwell’s No.4 seed, Sophie Morrison, in the final.

In the under-13 section, Shona Whillans (Longniddry) completed an impressive clean sweep. She beat Edinburgh’s Rachel Lu 21-21, 21-15 in the singles’ final and then joined Sarah Brogan (Longniddry) and Glen Lewington (Edinburgh) for victories in the girls’ and mixed doubles respectively.

In the Under-23 Championships, South Queensferry’s Matthew Carder claimed the men’s singles title, while the Edinburgh pair of Peter Hockey and Duncan Leith won the men’s doubles.
