Bad weather edges Croall closer to title

BRUCE CROALL took another massive step towards a third successive Meadowbank Track League title without turning a pedal when last night's round of racing fell victim to the weather.

With a massive lead over his City of Edinburgh colleague Derek Smith and only two weeks of racing left, Croall is virtually assured of overall success.

Meanwhile, another rider from the Capital club, Daisy Sherwood, was in action at the British Junior and Youth Championships in Wales.

Sherwood was third fastest in qualifying, but exited at the hands of eventual winner Jess Varnish who is already a full Great Britain international at the age of 17.

That match took its toll on Sherwood who then also lost out in the bronze medal ride-off.

There are high hopes of a medal for Edinburgh Racers youngster Callum Skinner who is due to celebrate his 16th birthday by challenging for the youth sprint title this afternoon.

The James Gillespie's schoolboy is desperate to make his mark and boost his bid for a place in the Great Britain Olympic Development Programme which would see him benefit from the input of the Manchester-based coaches who have helped to mastermind the success of the Olympic squad.
