SOUTH QUEENSFERRY high jumper Allan Smith jumped superbly in the European Under-23 Championships in Tampere, Finland, to pick up a bronze medal.
Smith first cleared 2.24m for a new best before going on to improve that to 2.26m, the second best jump ever by a Scot behind Geoff Parsons’ Scottish National record of 2.31m set back in 1994 at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada.
Needless to say, Smith’s new best is another qualifying height for Glasgow 2014. “I can’t believe it to be honest. I felt quite heavy-legged yesterday,” said Smith. “As I got closer to the competition I felt good and it was great to come away with a PB. I knew I’d have to jump a PB to win a medal so it wasn’t easy.”
