Ennis wants 7,000 points

Olympic champion Jessica Ennis wants to become only the fourth woman ever to break
the 7,000-point mark for the heptathlon.

The Sheffield athlete set a new British record of 6,955 points as she won gold in London this summer, and now has her sights set on one of sport’s iconic
landmarks.

American Jackie Joyner-Kersee holds the world record with 7,291, with Carolina Kluft of Sweden (7,032) and Russian Larisa Turchinskaya (7,007) the only other competitors ever to break 7,000.

Ennis’ current best ranks her fifth on the all-time list, also behind German Sabine Braun (6,985).

“Now the Olympic thing has been achieved, that’s a great position to be in,” she said, “but now I have to look forward to trying to get my title back at the Worlds next year and looking forward to 7,000 points, just setting yourself new goals.”
