Chris Hoy takes consolation in Keirin win after sprint error

SIR CHRIS HOY admits that he still has work to do ahead of next month’s cycling UCI World Cup in London after a night of mixed fortunes at the Revolution Meeting in Manchester.

The Capital star, 35, posted the quickest time in qualifying for the individual sprint and eased through his quarter-final to book a showdown with fellow Briton Jason Kenny. However, an error by Hoy allowed the younger man to take the win after launching an early attack.

Kenny, who was recently awarded the world sprint title after the retrospective disqualification of Frenchman Gregory Bauge for missing two drugs tests, then saw off Matt Crampton in the best-of-three final.

Hoy bounced back to win the Keirin in impressive fashion, powering past the field on the final circuit. And he concluded his night by linking up with Kenny and Crampton to win the team sprint against a strong French trio.

“It’s a stepping stone towards the World Cup in London. I want to win whether it’s the Revolution or the Olympics,” said Hoy. “I was disappointed with my sprint. It’s an area I’m trying to make less and less errors. To win the Keirin was great.”
