Athletics: New high for Nuttall

Capital exile Emma Nuttall (Edinburgh AC) has soared to the top of the UK women’s high jump rankings for 2013 in capturing the Canada West indoor title with a leap of 1.85 metres in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The 20-year-old Tynecastle High FP, who is studying history at Trinity Western University in Vancouver where she is coached by the former Scottish national coach Laurier Primeau, beat her previous indoor best of 1.83m set in winning the 2011 Scottish indoor title.

She is now second on the Scottish All-time indoor list behind Dingwall’s Jayne Barnetson (1.86m) and believes she can take over the top spot when she competes in the Canadian National student championships in Edmonton, Alberta next week. “Hopefully I can maintain this peak till then and get over 1.87m – I just didn’t quite have it in me this time but had a decent clearance at 1.85m and that’s boosted my confidence a bit after a shaky start to the season,” said the former Strathclyde University student. “There’s a really nice indoor stadium there in Edmonton so I’m excited about it,” added Nuttall.

Fellow Scot Calum Innes (Victoria Park, Glasgow) also set a personal best of 8.01 seconds in winning the 60 metres hurdles.
