Athletics: McConnell tempted by Glasgow 2014
GLASGOW’S Lee McConnell admits the prospect of a fourth Commonwealth Games appearance in her home city in 2014 is a huge temptation.
The 400 metre runner, who featured in her third successive Olympic Games in London, has made no decision yet about her long-term future.
McConnell’s immediate focus is the remainder of the track season and her wedding in early November to fiancé Craig Bonthron. But the 33-year-old has revealed the prospect of two more winters of hard training won’t necessarily put her off – with London 2012 having whetted her appetite for Hampden in the summer of 2014.
“The prospect of winter training is not too bad,” said McConnell, back in training again in Glasgow following appearances in the Olympic 400m semi-final and 4x400m final.
“You soon forget how bad it can be when the season starts! And, in London, all that sacrifice and pain that you have been through the months before is worthwhile. It makes up for anything you have done in the winter. London 2012 made all that okay.
“Glasgow 2014 is a huge attraction and my experiences in London, with all that amazing support from the public, makes it even more of an attraction, I think.
“We will see. At the moment I still want to focus on competing. The future will come around after that. You cannot make plans until the season is over.”
