Arthur breaks radio silence
EDINBURGH'S world boxing title hopeful Alex Arthur broke his recently imposed vow of pre-fight silence yesterday to tell defending champion, Joan Guzman: "You are in for the fight of your life when we clash on May 3,".
"Even though I'm still recovering now from jet lag I am confident – despite my underdog status among the media and boxing insiders – that I will give Guzman the fight of his life," said Arthur, currently the WBO's interim superfeatherweight champion.
"As I've said before, the Guzman camp are making the same mistake as American 1976 Olympic Games gold medal winner, Howard Davis, who thought that Glasgow's Jim Watt was just some hick from the sticks – but in fact, Watt outpointed him widely to retain his title back in 1980. Guzman is going to get the same suprise."
Elsewhere, Gilmerton's Scottish light-welterweight champion John Thain beat Sean Moore and his lightweight division clubmate Connor McCallum defeated John Gilheaney to enable an Eastern Scottish select to draw with an English north-eastern boxing team 6-6 at Kinghorn's Pettycur Bay Centre last night.
