American Football: Wolves tear the Wildcats to shreds

EDINBURGH WOLVES notched up an impressive victory at Meadowbank stadium with a 39-0 win over American football newcomers Highland Wildcats.

After losing to Manchester Titans in their season opener, the Wolves were keen to mark their first home game of 2009 with a win. Running back Salim Ahmed opened the scoring in the second quarter when he powered through the middle with a four-yard run.

That was followed by a two-point safety when the Wolves defence swarmed the Wildcats backfield and brought the ball-carrier down in his own endzone. Edinburgh receiver Stu Galloway gave the home crowd plenty to shout about with an 85-yard kick-off return for another score – the first of three trips he made to the endzone.

Quarterback Allan Price helped him add another six points with a 28-yard touchdown pass.

In the second half, Galloway was handed the ball on a reverse run play which saw him hit the endzone from 11 yards out.

Price then rolled out right and found running back Richard Anderson with a six-yard touchdown pass, and rookie Ryan Venters ran in for another score. Billy Mitchell added the extra point.

Meanwhile, the Forth Valley Fusion beat Sheffield Tomahawks 20-14.
