Alasdair Strange and Jade Nimmo lead field in Glasgow

ALASDAIR Strange and Jade Nimmo were among the star performers in the Scottish National Championships at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow yesterday.

Strange (Shettleston Harriers) improved his own Scottish senior indoor pole vault best by one centimetre – he also set a Scottish Native record – in recording 5.16m with his first attempt, while Nimmo (Falkirk Victoria Harriers), in her first indoor long jump competition since 2007, broke the Scottish under-20 record. Loughborough-based Strange progressed to 5.21m but failed to clear that height.

In the long jump, Nimmo, with her first effort, recorded a new indoor lifetime best of 6.06m to erase the 18-year-old national under-20 record (5.94m) set by Ruth Irving.

On the track, Nick Smith (Shaftesbury Barnet) raced to an impressive seventh successive victory in the men's 60m in 6.71s, one short of the record eight successive national indoor victories achieved by Alison Grey in the shot putt throughout the 1990s.

In the 800m, Scottish under-20 record holder Guy Learmonth (Lasswade AAC) warmed up for his Aviva UK Championships debut with a convincing victory.
