We started on the tenth today. The weather was great, the course was sensationally good. Everything was perfect apart from my golf.
I started by heading into the bunker at ten and just never really got going. Of the three courses Carnoustie is the hardest course and if you are a little off with your game it just accentuates it and I struggled.
My partner, Richie Ramsay, finished with four straight birdies which was absolutely sensational. I had heard a lot of good things about him and the standard is so high here. We had a good time, a good laugh. He started really well then bogeyed 16, 17 and 18 and he had a great fight back. It looked like he could dead and buried but he came back and had four straight birdies. It gave him a massive boost.
My best hole was the 14th. I turned my drive over and blocked my second shot, thinned my third shot then holed one from about 25 feet which probably just summed my day up. Richie hit two fantastic shots on the green there and was about 15 feet away, just missing his eagle.
If you get any of these courses the way the weather was today it just makes it extra special.
We finished minus five which is respectable. Richie had 69 which puts him in a great position.
All in all we have had a great day. It is a fabulous competition.
Ruud Gullit and I were talking about the logistics of the competition and getting everyone through the three courses. The way it is done is fantastic and if you get the weather it is an added bonus.
We had a good laugh going round. Ruud is a funny guy who I've known for a long time and Richie is great to play with.
This is the third straight day I have played and my knees are ready to pack in but I will just about manage to get out my bed in the morning for Kingsbarns. I am looking forward to it and I have to play better than I played today. When I am 65 I am going to treat myself to two new knees.
