Accies up to third place after Hawick victory

EDINBURGH ACCIES shrugged off a disappointing defeat seven days earlier and moved up to third spot in the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One with a battling 16-11 win away to Hawick.

The Raeburn Place men trailed 11-6 at the break, with their points coming from two Stewart Walker penalties, but the visitors rallied in the second period to give coach Ian Barnes victory over his former club.

Walker slotted another penalty and added the conversion to a try by Iain Berthinussen as Accies snatched the victory.

There was also an upturn in fortunes for Currie, who travelled to face Melrose and returned with a 20-12 victory to their credit.

First-half tries by Ryan Reeves and Graham White were converted by Johnny Smith to give Ally Donaldson's men a two-point lead at the break, and a penalty apiece from Smith and Reeves completed the job.

In Division Two, Telford College lecturer Eddie Pollock had the bragging rights at work today after his Haddington side saw off Stewart's Melville, who are coached by his colleagues Graeme Moffat and Andy Muir.

Rhodri Thomas got two tries and Sam Hughes joined him on the scoresheet, with Greig Taylor kicking the rest of the points as the Scarlets bounced back from two losses and moved up to third place with a 22-18 win over the Inverleith men who had tries from Stuart Clark and Alex Edmonstone, plus eight points from Jimmy Moran's boot.

Elsewhere, Musselburgh sealed a second successive win when they held off a second half fight back by Kelso at Poynder Park. The result moves Craig McGeary's men away from the foot of the table and puts them within striking distance of a small group of teams above them.

Meanwhile, Division Three strugglers Livingston are still without a point after losing 44-10 to Hillhead/Jordanhill.
